A familiar tenant is coming to West Oaks Mall but in a different type of concept than we’ve seen in the past — one that will bring about 500 jobs to the region by 2018.

A new Bed Bath & Beyond e-commerce call center is expected to take up 34,991 square feet of retail space at the Ocoee mall, occupying a portion of the former Belk’s store that has been vacant since 2008.

The project, known as the Florida Call Center, is expected to process online and phone-in orders for the Union, N.J.-based retailer, which will then be shipped from an Atlanta warehouse.

Sanford-based DHP Construction LLC last week filed a notice with Orange County that it plans to begin interior demolition on the former Belk’s building at 9407 W. Colonial Drive, public records showed. Construction is expected to be completed by late summer.

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. in January signed a 10-year lease with Las Vegas-based mall owner West Oaks Mall FL LLC that includes two five-year lease extensions, Orange County records showed.

“The city of Ocoee has been working closely with the owners of the West Oaks Mall, Moonbeam Capital Investments, and we are excited to learn about the new Bed Bath & Beyond call center at the mall,” said Angel de la Portilla, the city’s economic development consultant, in an emailed response. “The Florida Call Center will bring more new jobs for Ocoee.

"Moonbeam Capital has been doing a great job over the past year in converting retail space, which had been vacant for years, into new office space and with all this activity, the West Oaks Mall is slowly making a comeback.”

This is the fourth large tenant to be announced at the mall in the last year, kickstarted by the huge revamp of the former Sears into a 70,000-square-foot SunPass Centralized Customer Service Center run by Xerox Corp. (NYSE: XRX), which created 500 jobs, as previously reported by Orlando Business Journal.

A new GameTime family entertainment center also is in the works at the mall, as is a new 250-seat Bates New England Seafood & Steakhouse, as previously reported by OBJ.
